I read something this week about the gift of giving at Christmas and the merits of spending real quality time together rather than over-loading the stockings and wondering where the mountains of new plastic will possibly fit. With this in mind, Mrs Hibbsy and I have reviewed the lists we (she) has made and spent some time thinking about alternatives to physical gifts instead trying to find ways that we could gift opportunities for time to be gifted rather than items. I’m not talking offering to do someone’s garden or clean their car – although I see the merits in this for those that would benefit but something more like a voucher for a day out or a ticket to something.
Perhaps it’s more for those with younger families rather than the older relatives we buy for, but one such opportunity that we really valued was the time we spent in Manchester over the half term break visiting one the girls’ favourites the Sea Life Centre and then on to the Lego Discovery Centre, which is literally next door. We had a great day out dividing the attractions over our day and spent some quality time exploring a world of fishes and turtles as well as octopus and seahorses. Then we went on to building towers of craning Lego, riding on-board Lego rides and witnesses the displays of cities crafted from the smallest of colourful bricks.
At the heart of the Discovery Centre, is a place to pause and eat a picnic or use the café facilities available. There’s a play and build zone and even a 4D cinema to fill your day with budding Lego architects,
What we liked about this day out was that it was all indoors which is great when we hit the autumn and winter and the lull of Christmas is over.
So, we’ve decided that gifting with vouchers for activities is perhaps the way forward this year when there simply is too much plastic already!
